This traditional Japanese paper fan is used to control the heat of the charcoal while grilling.
The Uchiwa is coated with Kakishibu Varnish ( derived from fermented unriped persimmon tannin), which makes its Japanese traditional paper (Washi) strong and long-lasting, while also having an effect of insect proofing.
The ribs and handle are made of bamboo, giving it flexibility.
